Collaborative Pianist

Chiao-Yu Wu is a Taiwanese pianist currently pursuing her doctoral degree in Piano Performance at the University of Washington (UW), where she studies under the mentorship of Robin McCabe. Her educational journey has taken her from the Royal Academy of Music (RAM) in London, where she earned her undergraduate degree, to the University of Michigan School of Music for her Master’s degree.

Her competition and scholarship accomplishments include Mortar Board Alumni/Tolo Foundation Scholarship (2024), American Protege International Concerto Competition (2024), UW Piano Concerto Competition (2023), Taiwan 2nd International Classical and Traditional Music Awards (2018), 4th Annual Camerata Concerto Competition (2017), and RAM Delius Prize  (2015).

Chiao-Yu has served as a teaching assistant in piano department at UW for the past four years and was named a finalist for the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2023. In her teaching, she enjoys nurturing the next generation of pianists according to their individual needs and sharing her passion for music.

As a performer, Chiao-Yu has shared her talent at world-class venues such as Carnegie Hall and has a deep commitment to sharing music with various communities. She regularly performs in retirement houses, hospitals, and churches. As a collaborator, she works with the UW Symphony Orchestra, local Seattle musicians, and is a collaborative pianist for the Bellevue Youth Choir.

Outside of her music career, Chiao-Yu enjoys a variety of hobbies. She is passionate about visiting art museums, seeing ballet and opera performances, golfing, baking, yoga, and Pilates.

Education background

DMA in Choral Conducting University of Washington
Nicholas is pursuing his DMA in Choral Conducting at the University of Washington under the supervision of Dr. Geoffrey Boers and Dr. Giselle Wyers.
Bachelor of Education University of British Columbia
He earned his Bachelor of Education specializing in Secondary Music and French at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, BC, Canada) where he received the prestigious Outstanding Practicum Award.
Bachelor of Music University of Victoria
Nicholas graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Victoria (Victoria, BC) where he double majored in Secondary Instrumental Music Education and Voice Studies (and a minor in French); while at UVic, Nicholas was Assistant Director of the UVic Vocal Jazz Ensemble and the UVic Chamber Singers. In addition to his duties as a high school teacher in recent years, Nicholas has served as Director of Vox Maris Tenor-Bass Choir (Abbotsford, BC), Assistant Director of Joy Vox Community Choir (Abbotsford, BC), Artistic Director of the Fraser Valley Community Winds (Abbotsford, BC) and as the 2018 Intern Conductor of the BC Youth Choir, where he was honoured to work under the tutelage of esteemed Canadian choral conductor, Allison Girvan. In 2023, he was chosen as one of a handful of choral conductors to attend the Cascade Choral Conducting Masterclass in Tacoma, WA, where he had the pleasure of conducting the first two movements of the Fauré Requiem with choir and orchestra in concert.
Master of Education Simon Fraser University
Nicholas has recently completed his Master of Education at Simon Fraser University (Burnaby, BC), where his research focused on leadership, inclusion, and decolonization in the classroom. He is devoted to building community and cooperation through the study of music, engaging in innovative teaching that involves a variety of approaches and activities to foster teamwork. Nicholas works hard to empower others to develop confidence as they learn to express their creativity through group music-making and engaging musical performances.

Son parcours éducatif l’a menée de la Royal Academy of Music (RAM) de Londres, où elle a obtenu son baccalauréat, à l’école de musique de l’Université du Michigan, où elle a obtenu sa maîtrise.

Parmi ses réalisations en matière de concours et de bourses, citons la bourse Mortar Board Alumni/Tolo Foundation (2024), l’American Protege International Concerto Competition (2024), l’UW Piano Concerto Competition (2023), le 2nd International Classical and Traditional Music Awards de Taïwan (2018), le 4th Annual Camerata Concerto Competition (2017) et le RAM Delius Prize (2015).

Chiao-Yu est assistante d’enseignement au département de piano de l’Université du Washington depuis quatre ans et a été nommée finaliste pour le prix d’excellence en enseignement en 2023. Dans son enseignement, elle aime nourrir la prochaine génération de pianistes en fonction de leurs besoins individuels et partager sa passion pour la musique.

En tant qu’interprète, Chiao-Yu a partagé son talent dans des salles de classe mondiale telles que le Carnegie Hall et s’est profondément engagée à partager la musique avec diverses communautés. Elle se produit régulièrement dans des maisons de retraite, des hôpitaux et des églises. En tant que collaboratrice, elle travaille avec l’orchestre symphonique de l’Université du Washington, des musiciens locaux de Seattle et elle est pianiste collaboratrice pour le Bellevue Youth Choir.

En dehors de sa carrière musicale, Chiao-Yu s’adonne à divers passe-temps. Elle aime visiter les musées d’art, assister à des spectacles de ballet et d’opéra, jouer au golf, faire de la pâtisserie, pratiquer le yoga et le Pilates.
